Hi home lovers, Mckenzie House provides very green view around it. It seems the air feels so great and breathtaking. The Mckenzie House is perfectly designed by Atelier Workshop. This house stands in Hawkes Bay, New Zealand. Detailed structural engineer of the house is Spencer Holmes – Peter Smith. And for the project area, it features 80 sqm. Well, actually, the green view encircling the Mckenzie House is kind of an apple tree orchard – so fantastic. Above the level of the apple tree orchard, it is viewed Te Mata peak, the valley of the Tukituki River and the distant Tararua ranges.

Detailed description of the Mckenzie House

The Mckenzie House seems very unique. The apple tree orchard becomes a description as a sense of isolation from the existing house. Encircled by the tree orchard, the Mckenzie House feels like it is nested by it – look hidden. The Mckenzie House contains two level volumes; ground and upper floor. At the ground floor, everyone will be spoiled by the mighty apple tree orchard. And on the second floor, it contains the bedroom and relaxing area. From the upper level area, everyone can make a simple view from within the canopy of the orchard.

A glance review of the Mckenzie House

“According to archdaily.com, our aim was to insert the new house “Mckenzie House” into the orchard thereby providing a sense of isolation from the existing house and giving the feeling of being nestled within the apple orchard. We aimed to contrast this sensation with the feeling of looking over the trees, providing spaces that sit in the canopy of the trees and take in the larger landscape that is unique to Hawkes Bay.
Another priority was to create a house that responded to and acknowledged the existing John Scott designed house: simple volumes juxtaposed and connected to capture the best views and orientation: the volumes are pushed out from a centre.
For these reasons, we designed the new building as a simple two level, compact, cubic volume reintroducing and abstracting the themes developed by John Scott. Our choice was to create a volume that combined at the same time the introverted effect and the outward looking. The introverted sensation was being developed through the ground floor level of the house by being part of the grid of the surrounding orchard.
The upper level contains the bedroom and provides a relaxing area where the distant views can be enjoyed from within the canopy of the orchard. A simple pallet of materials was used playing with the contrast of smooth and textured materials. We aimed to create a house that is low energy through the use of solar passive design principles while allowing for the possible installation of active systems at a later stage.
